PRO EUROPE welcomes European Commission’s study on ‘Use of Economic Instruments and Waste Management Performances’

Brussels, 31 May 2012 – In its study on the ‘Use of Economic Instruments (EIs) and Waste Management Performances’, BIO Intelligence Service (BIOIS) has carried out a critical examination of the relation between waste management in EU Member States and the use of EIs. Focusing on Charges for waste disposal and treatment (landfill / incineration taxes and fees), pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) schemes and extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes for specific waste streams, the consultants find that a mix of EIs can make an important contribution to more sustainable waste management and making prevention, recycling and reuse more attractive.
